On our podcast ‘Tales That Tethr’, tethr Founder & CEO Matt Zerker interviews entrepreneurs, experts, thought leaders, and regular people about what is means to be a man, the challenges that modern men face, and how to overcome challenges and live life in a more connected and authentic way.
Welcome to tales that tethr, a series written by and for the tethr community. If you’d like to share your own story of strength and support, click here. Today we’re honored to share Steven's story.
When I think about my mental health journey, when I became homeless for the first time stands out to me. Looking back on that time, I would tell my younger self that some of your best and worst days so far are going to happen when you're homeless, but the platonic love you have for yourself, and God, will always get you through those days.
None of my family and friends coddled me when I was homeless. It would've helped when I was homeless if the relationship between my parents and I was healthier.
The best advice I've received is to always tell the truth no matter how scary it is. Being vulnerable when appropriate has helped me in my mental health journey. When I'm struggling now I free-write and I made a gratitude list.
If I could change something in my life I would change my career from waiting tables to being one of Hollywoods most powerful players. I'm working on getting a movie made inspired by my homeless experiences that will support homeless youth. So far the experience is exciting, stressful, and a lot of work.
To me, peer support is when a group of individuals challenge each other so they can grow, succeed, and achieve similar goals independently or together. If you're considering joining tethr, I say, why not? You've got nothing to lost, anonymity is welcomed, and what you do with the platform is completely up to you. There's no pressure. To me the orange tethr circle represents a yellow happy face and heart emoji, and when you mix the two together you get an orange tethr circle.
In addition to tethr, Steven supports Jovenes, Inc. He’s been a valued member of the tethr community June 2020.
